What to see on the Isle of Barra

Barra offers plenty of things to see and explore for all age groups and tastes. There are a few guide booklets available locally at the Tourist Office and hotels, but for a good starting point before you travel to the Island read HISTORY YOU CAN SEE, written by the Heritage Centre.

See also SOME HISTORICAL DATES ON BARRA for some important social, political and economical events throughout the centuries.

Barra is abundant with stunning scenery, rare flowers and wildlife, which can be appreciated by coastal or hill walks, drives or cycle rides along the various small roads, or simply over a cup of tea or coffee in one of the local hotels or cafes. Car and bicycle hire are available locally, and BARRA CAR HIRE supply a detailed guide of things to see along the way with each hire car.

For energetic children there are plenty of safe sandy beaches to play on, or the caves at Cleat to explore, and plenty of wildlife to spot, such as otters, seals, dolphins, crabs and birds of prey. There is also a swing park in Castlebay and Northbay. Be prepared for the great outdoors and all weathers!

Watching the plane land on the beach is entertaining, and a small café at the ‘airport’ makes it enjoyable and relaxing – whatever the weather! Boat trips to Mingulay and Eriskay are available during the season, and a small boat will take you to Kisimul Castle out in the bay.
