Marine Special Area Of Conservation

Marine Special Area Of Conservation

Economic Impact Assessment
Halcrow has been commissioned by the Scottish Government to investigate the potential impacts of the designation of two proposed Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) at the Sound of Barra and East Mingulay.

They anticipate considerable local interest in this study and recognise the importance of undertaking a wide-ranging consultation to help us to understand and assimilate the views, issues and concerns of the local community into the study.

Dr Caroline Currie, Principal Economist, and Dr David Medio, Chief Marine Scientist will both be in Barra and South Uist between the 24th and 27th May to speak with a range of local stakeholders.  There will be a drop in session on Wednesday 26th, 4 - 6pm in Castlebay Hall (venue to be confirmed, watch for posters).

Through the consultation exercise Halcrow are seeking to gain a clearer understanding of the fishing and other activities underway within both areas and assess the implications of different future management practices in relation to the two areas.  They are also interested in assessing the wider social and economic impacts, both negative and positive, which may arise as a result of designation.
