Volcanic Ash Cloud Disrupts all Air Services
All flights within and to and from the Western Isles have been cancelled as a result of result of the cloud of volcanic ash drifting across the UK from Iceland. Across Scotland airports have been closed because of the danger that the cloud of dust and particles would choke plane engines. Emergency service and Rescue helicopters operated by the Coastguards and the military will still be able to operate.
The National Air Traffic Service (NATS) imposed restrictions to UK airspace this morning. A NATS spokesman said it has “restricted the number of aircraft flying into UK airspace because of an ash cloud caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Volcanic ash represents a significant safety threat to aircraft. We are monitoring the situation with the Met Office, Eurocontrol and neighbouring countries, and working closely with the airlines to help inform their decisions about their operations.”
