Eoligarry School Meeting - A “Conversation” about Educational Provision?
A meeting was due to be held in Eoligarry school yesterday as part of the ongoing “Conversation” into Educational provision in the Western Isles.
In response to an email from Donald Manford the following came from Angus Campbell, Leader of the Council; “The meeting in Barra is of course the same as these we are having all over these islands with our primary schools; a conversation regarding education provision across our estate. This will then inform any future decisions as to the possibility of going to formal consultation with any of our schools. This wider level of consultation reflects our agreements with government through the single outcome agreements and the concordat and also the new legislation which will inform our decision making process.”
This “conversation” exercise is viewed with deep suspicion by the parents of children attending Eoligarry School as they view the “conversation” as the preliminary step towards proposed closure of the school. Eoligarry School is a well respected, well attended primary school serving the communities at the north end of Barra, has a rising school roll and is in better condition than any other school on the island.
Any attempt to close the school will be fought tooth and nail by parents,
children and the community that the school serves.
