Barra Watersports Give Conference Presentation
Berneray Community Centre on the Isle of Berneray was the location for the Outer Hebrides Rural Network Event, organised by the Scottish National Rural Network, Organisations and individuals from across the Western Isles had the opportunity to hear about some of the projects and activities taking place not only in the Western Isles but elsewhere in rural Scotland; get an update on the Scottish Rural Development Programme and learn about funding opportunities available to them through programmes such as LEADER Innse Gall. Chairing the event was Frank Rennie, Professor of Sustainable Rural Development. Katie Denehy, Ruaraidh Campbell and Luke MacKinnon from the Barra Watersports Club gave an excellent presentation about the work of the club; the boys involvement as young people achieving instructors certificates; their contribution in 2009 of over 150 hours of volunteering; and the considerable involvement of all eligible young Barra people at all levels of the sailing, windsurfing and kayaking activities being delivered by the Watersports club. Barra Watersports were asked to do a presentation because of their successful Outer Hebrides Leader application for funding to purchase dinghies etc, and the club was the first in the Western Isles to draw down the grant money awarded having completed their project for 2009.
