The Future of Highland Airways Gives Cause for Concern
Benbecula / Stornoway Air Service is delivered by Highland Airways and there is growing concern about the future not only for this route but for the company themselves. The concern was brought to light when it became clear that they were, for the present, not taking any bookings on their web site. In a press statement made on 26th January, the company stated
“ In response to various speculations in the press, Highland Airways would like to provide an update of progress. As mentioned yesterday the company is currently facing difficult trading, most recently exacerbated by the severe winter, and resultant reduced flying and reduced income. The Board has been seeking new investment, and has been in discussion with several parties. It is anticipated that a further 48 hours will be required before any announcements can be made.
Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus MacNeil has today been in contact with the Scottish Government Transport Minister, Stewart Stevenson MSP regarding the ongoing financial problems at the Inverness based airline Highland Airways. Mr MacNeil commented; “It is regretful that Highland Airways find themselves in this situation, I have been in contact with the Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson, and told him of the concerns many in the islands have about the ongoing problems at Highland Airways. “This is a company that run lifeline services to and within the Western Isles, and I would hope that the future of these services will be secure, and if the company cease trading, I would hope that a new operator will be found to run these services as quickly and as efficiently as possible.” In addition to the Benbecula Stornoway service highland Airways also links Stornoway to Inverness and links the islands of Colonsay, Coll and Tiree with Oban on the mainland.
Online bookings have reopened following a temporary suspension, but bookings are not being taken beyond Sunday. In a statement, Highland Airways said: "Flights beyond Sunday cannot currently be booked, and prospective travellers are asked to check back at the end of the weekend. "It is hoped that at that stage we will be close to knowing whether the long-term future has been secured, and full functionality can then be restored.
"In the meantime Highland Airways appreciates all the messages of support it has been receiving, and requests its passengers' indulgence and patience, whilst we work through this difficult period."
