Update from Harvest Marine
When we met representatives of the local community in Barra last year we said we would keep people informed about any progress investigating new locations for salmon farm sites around Barra.
So far, we have undertaken the initial appraisal of the location in the Sound of Hellisay and are ready to embark on the first stage of a planning application – know as screening and scoping. All fish farm development proposals go through this part of the process which is designed to give feedback to developers so that any issues of concern are identified at an early stage. This is a normal part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
The EIA is a procedure that must be followed for certain types of development before they are granted development consent. The procedure requires the developer to compile an Environmental Statement (ES) describing any effects a development may have on the environment and any proposed mitigation measures. The ES is circulated to statutory consultation bodies and made available to the public for comment. Its contents, together with any feedback from statutory consultees or the public, are considered by the local planning authority, Eilean Siar, as part of the planning process.
As we mentioned at our initial meeting we will of course undertake full consultation with the local community and relevant stakeholders as the application progresses
