Minimum Cockle Size for Harvesting 30 mm

Regulations on minimum size of cockles being harvested comes into effect on 25th January 2010. The Inshore Fishing (Prohibition of fishing for cockles Western Isles Scotland Order) was laid before Parliament by Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment.

The Regulatory Impact prospective harvest of larger Assessment states:
The proposed order prohibits only the fishing for cockles less than the 30mm in size, leaving open the prospect of harvesting larger cockles which will bring longer term financial benefit to the wider cockle industry.
 
There has been wide support for the Order including support from the Outer Hebrides Inshore Fisheries Group, which will continue to develop its local management plan for fisheries around the Western Isles.
