Northbay Inner Harbour Development
Work commenced this week on the redevelopment of Northbay Inner Harbour. The project, scheduled to be completed in March 2010, will see the existing berths enclosed providing greater shelter and significantly more space for berthing. In addition there will be a new 6m wide slip to enable launching, retrieval and servicing facilities for the community’s boat users including the local fishing fleet.
Northbay Port Users Association (NPUA) chairman William Douglas joined a small group of onlookers as the excavation of the harbour commenced. William commented, “It’s great to see the work on the harbour under way. We have been working towards this point since early 2005, so I am taking a great deal of satisfaction from being here today.”
While NPUA have raised some of the monies required for the project , the bulk of the funding has come from three sources; Big Lottery Growing Community Assets programme; Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Community Marine Access Scheme with the balance coming from Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
William commented “Accessing funding for a community project of this type has been a painstaking task, we would like to thank Coimhearsnachd Bharraidh agus Bhatarsaidh Ltd for their assistance throughout the process. We are also greatly indebted to the funding bodies whose support has made the project possible”
“When the harbour is complete, we will have a valuable community asset, which we aim to use as a platform to encourage all sections of the community, especially young people, to maintain and develop our marine industries, heritage and traditions.”
