The Heathbank Hotel on Barra was originally built as a mission house/church around the mid 1800's. About 100 years later the building was offering accommodation as a guest house. During the making of the classic film Whisky Galore, in 1948, some of the cast stayed in Heathbank. We first opened as a hotel in 1974 and Northbay enjoyed its first licensed premises since the closing of the Old Inn decades before.

Our menu, which varies according to supplies, features the best of Island produce with an emphasis on fresh fish and shellfish which is landed daily.

A typical 3 course meal would be around £18.00.  We are open to non-residents. Booking is recommended. We also cater for small weddings and other functions such as Christmas parties and business meetings - please call to discuss your requirements.

We are situated on the main circular road.

From the Sound of Barra ferry - turn left at Ardmhor. Turn off and left at Northbay T junction. We are approximately 300 metres past the church.

Barra Airport - turn left on the main road and left at Northbay T junction. We are approximately 300 metres past the church.

Oban Ferry - turn left at the top of the pier road to reach us by the west side of the island, approx 8 miles, or turn right to reach us by the East side, approx 6 miles.

The Craigard Hotel is situated on the hillside directly above the small town of Castlebay, with magnificent views over Kisimul Castle and beyond to the island of Vatersay. Parking is alongside the hotel, so guests need not climb long flights of steps to reach this amazing vantage point!

In addition to comfortable bedrooms, The Craigard offers a spacious restaurant. It’s popular with local residents (always a good sign) and the menu features fresh local cuisine, including fresh local seafood. Try hand-dived scallops or creel caught lobster, which are reckoned to be much better tasting than trawled shellfish. Catch of the day gives you the opportunity to enjoy freshly landed fish - perhaps to sample succulent local monkfish, herring or mackerel.

The Castlebay Hotel , opened in 1880 but expanded and modernised, offers you warm comfortable rooms, all en-suite with telephone and colour television. Overlooking Castlebay 'Barra's Capital' you will discover traditional hospitality, great comfort and friendly service. Our menus feature local shellfish - razorfish, scallops, crab, cockles and langoustines as well as the freshest of fish landed off local boats - haddock, cod, skate wings, turbot , sole, hake and monkfish. Salmon from Uist is also featured as is a range of steak and meat dishes.

The hotel is well-known for the quality of its food. Fresh seafood of all kinds is landed daily on Barra to provide our extensive fish and shellfish menu, which varies daily depending upon availability. During 2007, the menu has been extended by our new Chef to include items such as wild boar, hare, venison and other more exotic foods. We serve beef filet, Barra lamb, Welsh pork as well as vegetarian dishes.
