Northbay House

Northbay House is the former Northbay School and Schoolhouse, built in 1882 in a quiet, sheltered hollow at the head of beautiful Loch na Obe.  The house is on the island bus route, and is 15 minutes by car from the ferry terminals and from the airport. A warm welcome awaits you whether you select Self-Catering or Bed and Breakfast accommodation, which are both 4 Star standard and set in a sympathetic and imaginative renovation of the old school.   We offer comfortable, well-appointed en suite facilities for all visitors including wheelchair users. Northbay House is recommended by the Sunday Times, the Lonely Planet Guide, the Rough Guide and Holiday Which?

The Isle of Barra lies near the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides bordering the Atlantic Ocean, and is famed for the beauty of its beaches, machair (flower-studded grassland), lochs and hills. Although only a small island (approximately 9 x 5 miles with a population of 1100) it has a great variety of landscape, birdlife and flowers, and is often known as the “Jewel of the Hebrides”. The island is ideal for walking, cycling and birdwatching, has many archaeological sites, loch and sea fishing, an indoor swimming pool and a nine hole golf course. Car and cycle hire are available, and boat trips can be taken to Eriskay (where Bonnie Prince Charlie first landed in Scotland in 1745 to reclaim the throne for the Stuarts) and to deserted Mingulay with its puffin colonies and breathtaking cliffs. The island of Barra and its people were the inspiration for Compton MacKenzie's novel “Whisky Galore”, and the classic film of the book was made on location here. Enjoy a unique holiday experience on a beautiful island steeped in history with a rich Gaelic culture and a warm welcome to the visitor.
Sgoil a' Mhorghain is a 4 Star standard self-contained Self-Catering unit to accommodate four.   There is a ground floor, twin-bedded room, en-suite with shower (suitable for wheel-chair users) and a first floor double bedroom also with an en-suite shower.
The fully equipped kitchen / dining room is a spacious area for you to prepare and enjoy your meals. There is use of a laundry with washing machine, tumble dryer, sink, ironing facilities, ceiling airer and a large drying cupboard for outdoor clothing and footwear.
