Welcome to the Islands of Barra & Vatersay

The Sound of Barra ferry came into service in 2003, when the MV Loch Bhrusda moved south from the Sound of Harris service. The result was a fast, short and regular ferry service linking Barra to the rest of the Western Isles.
The best way to get to the mainland is by the ferry between Oban with Castlebay and Lochboisdale. There are around six sailings on the trianguar route each week from Oban and Lochboisdale, and most sailings call at Castlebay en route both ways. The journey between Oban and Castlebay takes just over 5 hours and is a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery on route.
The Twin Otters that serve the airport to almost always land into the wind. At high tide these runways are under the sea - flight times vary with the tide.
Oban railway station is the terminus of one branch of the highly scenic West Highland Line 163 kilometres (101.3 mi) north of Glasgow Queen Street. It was originally the terminus of the Callander and Oban Railway. Services are operated by First ScotRail.
There are three bus routes on barra. The W32 service covers the two routes from Castlebay via East & West sides of the island with both routes extending to the north taking in Northbay, Traigh Mhor Airport, Ardmhor slipway & Eoligarry - either via Brevig & the east coast, or via Borve & the West Coast.
