The Comunn Eachdraidh (Historical Society) was formed in 1995 to conserve and promote the culture and heritage of the islands of Barra and Vatersay.  The Society collects artefacts, documents and photographs, and has built up  extensive archives and collections.  It arranges exhibitions, displays and events of a social, educational and recreational nature.

The Society has over 150 members, who voluntarily give their time and expertise to manage the fine purpose-built Heritage Centre, and provide a warm welcome to all who seek to learn more about the history, language and culture of there unique and precious islands.

Located close to Castlebay is the Barra Heritage and Cultural Centre or “Duachas” in Gaelic.  We have a treasure trove of local artefacts and photographs on display, these range from traditional spinning wheels to pottery from the Stone age.

The true history of the Barra islands is explained in detail, as is the Culture.  Gaelic is spoken on the premises, so feel free to try a few words over a coffee and freshly baked Scone, with one of our staff.  We regularly have film evenings, showing of the diversity of the island, with films such as “Whisky Galore” or “The Disappearing Island”.  Another feature of the Centre is to hold traditional dances or “Cheilidhs” as we like to refer to them on the island, these dances consist of music, songs, drama and prose.  Myself and my staff look forward to welcoming you to the Barra Heritage and Cultural centre in the 2009/2010 season.

 

 

All proceeds from the admission charge go towards running Dualchas and local history projects throughout the Barra Isles. Dualchas is run by volunteers and depends entirely on public funding to maintain the building and operate the annual exhibition and events programme.
