Island Information

Barra has a population of approximately 1,300 and covers an area of 22,000 acres, 

including the island of Vatersay.  It combines all the best of  what the Western Isles offers, 

with a rugged and rocky coast, contrasting with the beautiful sandy bays, backed with machair 

(fertile natural grassland), and rising in the form of Ben Heaval to a height of 1,260ft.

It is a haven for the naturalist, with over 400 types of plant and 150 species of birds, being recorded.

Also in close proximity to the cottage is Britain's most westerly golf course, located at Grean 

Head, which offers a challenging course and  spectacular views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
